Our Involvements

TOWSELY SIMULATION CENTER
GSSA is the only undergraduate organization at U of M that has access to the Towsely Simulation Center. Here, members practice using surgical equipment through hands-on learning, just like medical students, residents, and faculty! Students have access to laparoscopic instruments, suturing equipment, and even the world-class Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System
CASE HACKATHONS
One of the core pillars of GSSA is discussing, synthesizing, and presenting solutions to real-world health problems. Through case hackathons, members are given a prompt that includes both medical and public health implications, and students work together to craft a holistic treatment plan for the patient. Students are assisted by those with more experience in the field, and have the opportunity to hone their understanding of complex treatment plans.
SUTURING
Each semester, GSSA hosts a hands-on suturing clinic to give members exposure to varied stitches and surgical techniques early in their careers. Members are assisted by medical students, residents, and faculty, who provide both group and one-on-one instruction. Oftentimes, real life scenarios are presented to make the practice more applicable, immersive, and meaningful.

EMERGENCY READINESS CLINICS
GSSA also places on emphasis on preparedness in emergency medical situations. Join our students as they learn techniques such as CPR, AED, stop the bleed, and more to make them ready in high-intensity trauma situations.
FACULTY PANELS
Learn about a variety of health topics from experts with global experience! Past panels have included, but are not limited to increasing global surgery capacity in resource-constrained settings, extended reality innovations: today and beyond, collaborating for impact in global health, business and surgery: what is means to be a private practice physicians, and more!
JOURNAL CLUBS
GSSA members also are able to participate in research and topics of interest with like-minded peers. Students will learn to improve their research interpretation and communication skills by discussing impactful global health research with those who have written groundbreaking publications.
IMMERSIVE CLINICAL OPPORTUNITIES
GSSA has exclusive connections with surgeons from the Center for Global Surgery. Students will have the opportunity to shadow surgeons in the operating room and gain first-hand experience about what a day in the life of a surgeon is like!
